Born in rural Heilongjiang in the 1980s, Wang Fong is the daughter of a Beijing “sent-down youth” of the Cultural Revolution who married a local farmer. Rising from countryside roots to graduate from Fudan University and work as a CCTV journalist, she returns in this 2001 documentary to her childhood village and to Beijing, retracing her mother’s journey. The film explores how the children of China’s “sent-down youth” struggled between rural beginnings and urban aspirations, seeking both belonging and identity across generations.
